The Next Shopping Window May Not Be Google

The next important fashion storefront may not look like a storefront at all.

For years, digital commerce was organized around a familiar sequence: search, scroll, click, compare, buy. Generative AI is beginning to compress that journey by allowing shoppers to describe a need conversationally and receive synthesized recommendations instead of a page of links.

THE SIGNAL

According to The State of Fashion 2026, 53 percent of US consumers who used generative AI for search in the second quarter of 2025 also used it to help them shop. Shopping-related searches on generative AI platforms grew 4,700 percent between 2024 and 2025.

The trust signal is equally significant: 41 percent of consumers in the report say they trust generative-AI search results more than traditional advertising, while 85 percent report greater satisfaction with AI-assisted shopping journeys than conventional ones.

This is not proof that traditional search disappears. It is evidence that product discovery is acquiring a new interface.

WHY PRODUCT LANGUAGE IS BECOMING INFRASTRUCTURE

An AI system cannot reliably recommend what a brand has failed to explain.

Generic copy—“premium leggings,” “buttery soft,” “perfect for every occasion”—creates very little information. Semantically rich product content is different. It states what the item is, how it fits, what material is used, what the construction does, when it is useful, how it should be cared for and what makes it distinct from another option.

McKinsey explicitly identifies semantically rich data and AI-readable digital infrastructure as priorities for brands seeking visibility in this new environment.

That makes product descriptions less of a decorative marketing exercise and more of a data layer connecting a product to the questions a customer may ask.

THE PALM POINT OF VIEW

We do not think the answer is to make fashion sound robotic. The opposite.

Brands now need two kinds of clarity at once: precise information machines can interpret and human storytelling people can care about.

For The Palm, that means product pages should become richer, not louder. Fit, fabric, movement, use case and care should be explicit. Editorial stories should explain the larger problem or cultural shift the product responds to. Photography should show context, not just inventory.

The future of discovery may reward the brands that can be understood deeply by machines without becoming emotionally flat to humans.
