THE PALM INTELLIGENCE / 03
There was a time when activewear had an obvious destination: the gym.
That boundary is disappearing. Movement now sits inside a much larger ecosystem of routines, identity, convenience, social life and personal wellbeing. The clothes associated with movement are being asked to perform across that ecosystem too.
THE SIGNAL
The State of Fashion 2026 calls this shift “The Wellbeing Era.” McKinsey and The Business of Fashion report that 84 percent of US consumers said wellness was a top or important priority in their day-to-day lives in 2024. Fifty-one percent said they would spend the same or more on health and wellness even if discretionary income declined.
The report also points to the growing importance of community: nearly nine in ten consumers say that participation in a like-minded brand community strengthens their connection to a brand.
Taken together, those signals suggest that wellness is no longer simply another product category. For many consumers it is becoming part of the architecture of everyday identity.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR CLOTHING
When movement is woven through a day rather than confined to a class, activewear has to negotiate more contexts. It may begin with training and continue through a commute, a coffee stop, a dog walk, errands, travel or an informal meeting.
That changes the design brief. Performance still matters, but so do visual restraint, comfort over long periods, styling flexibility and the ability to feel put together outside an explicitly athletic setting.
In other words, activewear is becoming less like equipment for one activity and more like infrastructure for a way of living.
KEY SIGNALS TO SAVE
01 — 84% of US consumers call wellness a top or important day-to-day priority.
02 — 51% say they would maintain or increase health and wellness spending even if discretionary income fell.
03 — Community is becoming part of brand value.
Nearly nine in ten consumers say a like-minded brand community strengthens connection.
THE PALM POINT OF VIEW
This is why we are interested in the space between categories.
A woman can train, work, walk her dog, meet a friend and move through New York without becoming five different people. Her clothing should not require five unrelated identities either.
We believe the strongest active lifestyle products will increasingly be judged not only by how they perform during a workout, but by how intelligently they participate in the rest of the day.
And if community is becoming part of how people experience wellbeing, brands have an obligation to think beyond transactions. A workout, a walk, an event, a conversation or a shared routine can become as meaningful to the brand relationship as a product launch.
