The dog-accessories market is visually sophisticated. That makes it easy to forget that a harness is not primarily an aesthetic object. It sits on a moving animal and transmits force through the body.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
A 2023 study examined 66 domestic dogs moving on a loose lead while wearing three commercially available harness designs. Researchers measured stride length relative to limb length, weight distribution and shoulder-related joint angles using a gait-analysis system.
With the exception of one measured angle, significant differences appeared across the investigated biomechanical metrics. Importantly, the effects varied between breeds and breed types. The researchers’ practical recommendation was straightforward: harness selection and fitting should be treated on an individual-dog basis.
Why “non-restrictive” is not a visual judgment
Owners often evaluate a harness by whether a strap appears to clear the shoulder. Biomechanics are more complicated. Strap position, tension, chest geometry, movement pattern, coat, body proportions and leash load can all alter how the product behaves.
A harness can also change over time as a puppy grows, weight changes, fur is cut or hardware is adjusted. Fit is therefore a process, not a one-time label on a size chart.
